...why does my Windows 2000 crash...

Probably because it's running on an Intel processor. To make an OS 'crash proof', it needs hardware support to adequately isolate OS code and data from application code and data. If an application attempts accessing resources beyond those allocated to its use, the event is trapped by hardware and the OS is called upon to deal with the situation in an orderly manner. Trying to accomplish this without hardware support would extract an unacceptable performance cost. Designing an OS requires finding a balance between performance and reliability given the available hardware environment. Some may find the choices made inapropriate for their particular application, and I sympathize with them, but the OS they're using has been designed to meet the needs of the majority, and the majority seems happy enough with it that it sells in the millions.

If a 'specialist' OS came along, meeting 'special' needs, I'm sure it would be accepted, and embraced, by the small number of people not currently well served by Windows. This doesn't make Windows bad, or the alternative good: It's just a better match.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. I'm pleased to observe the market opened lower this morning. The strong openings, only to fizzle as the day unfolds, usually means more price deterioration ahead. However, a strong decline at the open, followed by some recovery later in the day, is usually a positive sign.
