, try to stop the move to e commerce.. MCI techweb.com MCI To Detail E-commerce Initiatives (04/13/00, 8:57 a.m. ET) By Chuck Moozakis, InternetWeek Top MCI WorldCom executives, led by CEO Bernie Ebbers, chief technical officer Fred Briggs, and senior vice president of marketing Brian Brewer, are expected to outline the carrier's e-commerce initiatives at a press conference on Thursday. MCI WorldCom (stock: WCOM) declined to comment, but sources familiar with the announcement said MCI WorldCom will talk about offering enterprise customers a broad package of services that includes application hosting and e-commerce application integration, as well as specialized services that could include dedicated storage and optimized transport of mission-critical data. "This will eclipse plans that other carriers like AT&T and Qwest have done in this space," one source said. MCI WorldCom is expected to leverage data hosting and transport capabilities of its Uunet unit to make new services available. Uunet recently said it will beef up its backbone with high-speed M160 optical switches from Juniper Networks (stock: JNPR), letting the provider pump data at OC-192 speeds. Last summer, MCI WorldCom earmarked more than $100 million to build seven new Uuhost data centers by early this year, giving the carrier 15 such centers worldwide. MCI WorldCom has also quietly been putting the pieces together to support a more aggressive e-commerce push in other ways. The company formed partnerships with AppNet and Technology Solutions earlier this year to help support companies that want to launch e-business sites. AppNet provides back-end application integration; TSC provides application hosting expertise. Beyond e-commerce services, MCI WorldCom is also expected to discuss how it intends to support future delivery of IP voice and data traffic.
