Terrapin: One of the fun points re: "upgrading" GSM is that GPRS is an upgrade in the same space.

WCDMA is brand new in different frequencies now being auctioned for 3rd gen.

Therefore WCDMA is not an "upgrade" to GSM at all.

WCDMA is entirely separate and distinct from GSM or any other 2nd gen technology.

WCDMA is a new kid on the block.

In contrast, CDMA2000 is an upgrade to CDMAOne in the same space and the same set of frequencies. That is what 1XRTT is. And HDR can be used on the current frequencies if one channel is set aside for data only.

Perhaps a good way to understand the "upgrade" paths and 3rd gen is to look at the frequencies required.

Best.
