Offshore rig counts continue to improve

HOUSTON: Rig counts in the world?s major offshore oil and gas basins continue to improve, according to Offshore Data Services? weekly mobile offshore rig count.

This week, 156 of the 198 mobile offshore drilling rigs in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico are under contract. The net three-rig increase in the U.S. Gulf offshore rig count over the last week boosted the region?s offshore rig utilization rate to 78.8 percent, its highest level of the year and a significant improvement over the 61.1 percent utilization rate recorded one year ago.

A one-rig week-to-week increase in the European offshore rig count continues a recent upward trend in offshore rig demand in the region. This week, with 88 of the 106 mobile offshore drilling units in the region under contract, European offshore rig utilization is 83.0 percent.

Worldwide, a net four-rig increase in the number of offshore rigs under contract pushed overall offshore rig utilization to 79.5 percent, its highest level since February 1999. This week, 508 of the world?s 639 mobile offshore drilling units are under contract.
