I don't have a quick answer. But think about this. The company's employees (under guidance of the executives) define and develop and sell the product.
In a religious organization, who does that? The clergy or equivalent.
I don't want to get into this too deeply for the reasons you mentioned. I don't want to get deeply mired in metaphysics. So if my metaphor breaks down, nolo contendere! No harm, no foul. <g>
