Given my prior experiences [though like yours they do not include first-hand views of Cuba] i think that i too would remove my family a good safe distance from the Miami/Cuba area. But that's me. In this case the decision lies with Juan Miguel. Not me. Not you. Not drunken L zaro. Not the shadowy figures behind him. With Juan Miguel. 'Mi hijo', remember.

"If I were Elian's father, to protect him from harm....I would do anything, anything to protect him from danger.
Well the first thing he should do is get his kid away from the nutty relatives in Miami. The problem I had with Elian going back to Cuba was that he would be used for political propaganda, but the relatives in Miami beat Castro to it.
It really is sick. The kid should be left alone to play with his toys while the Judges, lawyers and psychologists sorted things out. There is no doubt in my mind the bunch in Miami are unfit to care for the boy.

<< If I were Elian's father, to protect him from harm, I'd climb the highest mountain, swim the deepest sea, fight any man or beast. >>

All fathers are different. Elian's father should still be given consideration, even if he wasn't concerned about whether or not Elian would die from his ordeal. After all FOR FOUR MONTHS, Elian's father partied in Cuba while his son was recovering from his devastating flight for freedom.

<< I would give my thanks to God, I would with relief, accept my grief, to save Elian. >>

Yes.... but what about giving thanks to the Miami Cuban's that fished Elian out of the water, saved his life and nursed him back to health? Not even ONE thank you from his father. Either he is an extreme ingrate, or he just doesn't care about Elian.

IMHO, Elian's father is only concerned with the brownie points that he can get from Castro, for forcing Elian to return to captivity in Cuba.

Being aware of Castro's taste for young children, I can see why Elian is terrified of going back there.
