ALTA hits the 2.5 MM registered user mark: biz.yahoo.com Wednesday April 26, 3:19 pm Eastern Time AltaVista free Web access service tops 2.5 mln users PALO ALTO, Calif., April 26 (Reuters) - Internet media and commerce portal AltaVista Co., a majority-owned unit of Internet venture capital firm CMGI Inc. (NasdaqNM:CMGI - news), said Wednesday it now has more than 2.5 million registered users. The company, which recently postponed its initial public offering, said it is signing up about 10,000 users per day through its free dial-up Internet access service, which was launched seven months ago. CMGI shares were off 11/16 trading at 61 on the Nasdaq stock market. Earlier this month AltaVista said it was postponing its IPO because of the weak market conditions, joining the ranks of several companies who said they would hold off on a public offering until the markets recovered from recent lows.
