True, yet it works in reverse for me. Not spending money makes me feel wealthy, because then I still have that money (regardless of what others think). Spending money makes me feel less wealthy, because then I don't have that money (even if spending it impresses others with my wealth).

Victor <record margin debt> I know that people have let their balance sheets tilt too far to stocks. If you have stocks on the one side of the ledger and lots of debt on the other -- a common situation -- then liquidating stock may not be enough to pay off the debt -- margin or credit card or house mortgage or personal loan etc. So much for "savings".
