Re: And imagine you got a home equity loan and took out cash advances...

Ouch! I'm afraid you're right about there being some people in that situation. Hopefully they'll be able to file under the old bankruptcy laws (that were too lenient, but everybody's entitled to one break)

Regards,

Dan

Some people may have took money from loans or credit cards and use the same money to buy stock on margin. The brokerage will match the amount deposited. This means they have nothing to start with and doubled the amount of borrowing. When margin call comes, they have no money to cover and forced to liquidate. This may have cause the recent selloffs.

RE:"And imagine you got a home equity loan and took out cash advances on credit cards to get the cash needed to get margin requirement for the purchases because you thought it would soon make you rich... I wonder how many people have actually invested like that recently..."

You would be surprised...
If the NASDAQ stays down a while...it will be the end of a lot of the margin crowd, their new cars and boats.
The markets always find a way of wiping the slate clean.
Unless they bought AMD of course.
