Steven, I read the book quite a few years ago, and not all of it is fresh in my mind. Yes, it is surprising that the empire didn't fall sooner. Also, I think that one segment of the "decay" mentioned, is moral decay. I believe they reached a point where, because of the past power, they felt invincible, and immune from defeat or interference, so engaged in all sorts of carnal, pleasures.

There was also a series of books written by the same woman that wrote "The Thornbirds". Something like McCullough. They were very interesting but, I imagine some literary license was taken. ~H~
