Steven, what's dangerous is we have people who believe black and white answers of the Hillary variety are possible and should be placed into law. I see black and white solutions being proposed on both sides of the political fence: Hillary's is one, the pure laissez-faire idea is another. I don't like either; as usual, I suspect that a practical solution - not a perfect solution, because there isn't one - is somewhere in between. Would you ever consider moving your family to Cuba? And if not why? I've never been to Cuba, so it's hard to say. I can think of any number of good reasons for not considering moving there, one of which being that I don't speak Spanish. I don't think I'd want to move to Haiti or the Dominican Republic either. If I had to work and earn as a Filipino works and earns, I wouldn't want to live in the Philippines. Do you believe a communist state is of moral equality than America? In other words, is it better or worse to grow up and live in a free society? Or, are you a moral relativists in regard to the issue? I don't think it's fair to compare Cuba with the US; it would be much more realistic to compare Cuba with its non-communist neighbors, Haiti being an ideal example. I'm not sure if growing up in Haiti would be any better than growing up in Cuba, I suppose it depends largely on the social status of the person doing the growing up. My point was that the third world poor are not "free", regardless of the political system of their country, and that our granting of different political status to entrants from Cuba is a political move that has nothing to do with desiring to see the un-free become free. What I'd like to avoid is the assumption that what is not Communist is by definition free, that freedom is simply the absence of Communism. a Democratic congressman (David Bonior) answer that he would send Elian Gonzales back to Nazi Germany if given the same scenario. I wonder if the Congressman would send a Jewish kid back to Nazi Germany... I'm told that we actually did send a shipload of Jews back to Nazi Germany, so there would be a precedent.
