Yes, in the way no shares where sold, but if I had sold those long shares a taxable event would have occurred.

Let me tell you of short position that you will not have to pay taxes on.
Say you short 1000 shares of the XYC company at say 30.
You now have $30,000 sitting in your account which you have not paid for other than its pledged against other securities in your account.
If XYC goes busto and never comes out... You have 30k tax free.
That's what's appealing to the Amzn shorts.:-)
