Many paid no taxes on the 40% they sold because they used a combination of tax deferred accounts and hedging strategies to avoid the taxable event. Do not assume that everyone who had the smarts to get the money in the first place is naive enough to run out and sell without first considering the tax deferred equivalents. Lots of ways to skin a cat.
