About margin (Sorry Tiquer) I have a margin call for monday of 40K, my oldest son has 21K and my youngest son has 11K. We will have met them by 9 AM. All three of us bought stock

Friday SUNW and others and intend to buy stock monday. Margin calls may move the market but fundamentals will be more important in the long run. Sorry for the mention of money but it puts a real face on Friday's market. Multiply it by thousands of investors and watch for the market to survive nicely Monday. IMHO.

Think about this. Total margin debt might actually INCREASE the next few days if unmargined or lightly margined accounts buy bargains on margin, and that could be
HEALTHY. It would amount to the transference of assets from weak to strong hands, which is what will ultimately turn this ship around.

It could! I hope I will have an opportunity to buy Sun and a couple of other stocks at fire-sale prices. I'll pay cash though.

For all I know, everybody could have been selling on Friday to AVOID getting a call, and the problem might be much less than assumed.

I wondered if the DOW took part of its hit on Friday because people expected margin calls.

Guess, we won't know, but we remain optimistic about Sun and other companies. (I say this as I sip a glass of Sancerre and sample a smoked halibut pate).

My husband who is usually the Nervous Nelley when the markets plunges said with confidence: "don't sell your stocks. You've got some good ones."

Cheers,

Mephisto

Dear Charles: Its hard to discuss Margin cause its my understanding no where is there a method of actually accumulating the amount of margin and relating it to the ability of the individual investor to handle it. In my case for instance, while I have NO current margin, I have an incredible capacity for margin as 40% of my portfolio is in fixed income investments (was 30% till recently-gg) which dont really move up or down much. So where I in margin, I would not be getting a call anyhow. Probably there are a lot of people who are like that and thus wont be getting calls. JDN
