Looking at this a different way, it always seemed to me that no one could design a CPU faster than Dirk Meyer. IMHO, no one ever came up with a RISC processor faster than the Alpha. Now Dirk and his buddies show up in the x86 world, and we see the fastest x86 processor the world has seen. The fact that for over a decade, the fastest CPU of the catagory is whatever Dirk has done is very impressive. To me, that places the burden on Intel, not AMD, to prove that their processor will be faster. To date, Intel has convinced me that Intel has a chance of having the fastest processor. IMHO, one chance is all that Intel has now.

Mike,

Great analysis and recap....thanks.

Mike,

I have analyzed literature about the Willy pipe. I believe that it was designed using sound principles, and will likely scale well to high frequencies.

Having said that, it is likely that Athlon will be pushed into faster processes more quickly than Willy, and will minimize the frequency differential. I don't see Willy blowing away K7 products any time soon.

Besides, the idiot management at Intel has chosen to tie Willy to an expensive DRAM type, which will reduce it's ability to compete.

Mike:
Is Dirk Meyer still with AMD? I thought I remembered seeing some rumors about him jumping ship...

Re: it always seemed to me that no one could design a CPU faster than Dirk Meyer...

Seymour Cray for big iron, Dirk Meyer for microprocessors? So far, that holds up. So if he stays with them, that gives AMD at least a decade of dominating the industry. Cool.

Dan

Mike I have to agree that Dirk Meyer is one hell of a Engineer and I'm glad he's on AMD's team!
