Scope out the intraday action on the Dow for the week of Oct 12-16, and the 19th-20th:

Dow lost about 100 points for the day, but had a bounce from the lows. Very similar action to now.

What I remember back then, at least in the days/weeks following, is that people were very worried about a credit crunch. The average person was not invested in stocks, but there was a worry that the banks would collapse and all the loans, including mortgages, would be called. Of course, the memory of the 70's credit crunch was still on everyone's mind.
