More on CMGI forming CMGIon with Novell and SUN

"Jumpstarting the CMGion network will be CMGion's access to NaviSite's (Nasdaq: NAVI) existing data centers and application management infrastructure in addition to the three to five dozen additional hosting nodes that NaviSite expects to integrate by calendar year-end through agreements with a variety of partners, such as the one announced today with co-location facilities provider Level 3 Communications. NaviSite's combination of strong, distributed application hosting and management services coupled with CMGion technology and services will create the world's largest, distributed Internet ASP facility. CMGion will pursue other ASP partners to further extend the network infrastructure in the weeks ahead."

=========================

So this is the ASP initiative that Novell promised. A distributed ASP using all of Novell's net services technologies and some of its Internet Operating System appliances for caching and flow control. Presumably this distributed ASP model can give Drew Major's ideas a test bed.

The ASP revenue model is closely associated with outsourcing --- something which appeals to corporations that do not want to spend money setting up complex suystems in-house themselves.

Novell is certainly getting into interesting areas for its future business.

I'm not exactly sure what it means to Novell shareholders if CMGion grows. CMGion makes money off of the ASP services. Novell makes money off of eDirectory and caching appliances.
The ASP net services model gets tested and perfected. Novell fine tunes an internet service which it can repackage.

I still think it looks like proof of concept but I certainly endorse it --- especially if what comes out of it is a partnership between Sun and Novell with Sun doing the web/data server and Novell doing the Internet Operating System and Directory based apps.
