Mucho: Some light should be focused in a couple of days on the situation in Japan with regard to WCDMA and how or even whether Qualcomm intends to support a separate bid in the new frequencies being auctioned. We should learn more during the Qualcomm conference call related to earnings Tues.

What many people seem to be missing is that the path to CDMA 2000 in Japan is clear and the initial steps toward its launch 1XRTT will happen this year with HDR probable early next in the current frequencies - simple upgrades.

And voila, CDMA2000 is there.

The current debate is over what happens within the new frequencies soon to be auctioned as 3rd gen. So far it looks as if some sort of "Japanese WCDMA" will be proposed for that set of frequencies by DoCoMo and it looks as if the other bids will be for similar technology. But of course there are no standards yet for that technology and no agreed specifications yet. So only time will tell what actually will happen in that space.

All that we know for sure is that CDMA2000 will be rolled out in Japan as upgrades on the frequencies now in use.

What the new frequencies yet to be auctioned will be used for is not concrete but DoCoMo has a technology in test.

I suggest we relax and watch.

Best.
