As I'm sure you know, Bob, a PC can become a broadcasting device' whereby any sound in the room where the PC is located can be captured, then either recorded and/or broadcast LIVE on the WWW...or both...without the targeted PC's user's knowledge.

Absolutely, please see funphone.com for more on this amazing technology.

Is that what this is all about?????

LOL!!!! Your password is Critical Mass?????

LOLOLOLOL!!!!!! I don't believe it!!! I am on the floor right now!!!!

That is the funniest thing I've ever seen here at SI..

Bob, I can assure you, I had no idea this was her problem. This is too funny. My post about critical mass was a joke. I was talking about an entirely different subject. You know how I am on Friday nights. It's when I get into the most trouble. That post was just a precursor to what I had hoped would be a fun night. THAT'S ALL!!!!

I hope you believe me because it is said with all sincerity. I have never tried to access anyone's account here at SI. That would be dishonest. I may be a lot of things, but dishonest is not one of them.

Thank You;

c.horn

Apparently, a users KEYSTROKES can be monitored in REAL-TIME with the
aid and application of certain administrative/sreverside "tools",

That'd be a really neat trick.

I'm not aware of any way that it'd be possible to do what you're talking about. And I'm a pretty sharp code-jockey.

a PC can become a 'broadcasting device' whereby any sound in the room

Not on this planet, it can't.

Please get expert guidance on these Urban Legend-like suspicions before continuing to present them as facts. These kinds of things can easily spook people who aren't experts or don't know experts who will steer them straight.

Hi Lorrie,

Normally I wouldn't post on Bob's thread, but...

I'm not sure why someone would go to the trouble of obtaining your password. What would it gain them? And I'm sure SI could track down the offender very easily.

If you think you got compromised, you should switch to using password safe ( counterpane.com ) . It generates passwords and stuff.

did you know my site duneram.com is based on an old password? It doesn't bother me that everyone knows my 'old' password. So visit the site and experience a public password. U can also find it at duneram.com

Now your post sounds like its got some paranoia flecked in here and there.

Years ago, I did write such kinds of software, but I was paid to do so for a legitimate project. Yes on UNIX systems its trivial to watch someone's keystrokes. On Windows its extremely easy to do it, so easy most people would probably freak out if they realized it.

But in actuality, I highly doubt someone would spend their precious time just to hack your machine. Unless you have cable modem or a direct non changing IP address, it would be difficult to find where your pc was logged in at any given point. However if you frequent chat rooms that are hosted by some of the more reputable outfits, there are certain people who can see the IP address you happen to be using at the moment.

Now to watch someone's keystrokes in Windows, they would have to get you to load something to your machine, and that thing would have to get started somehow (you would have to start it). But even then watching every keystroke in real time (while it could be done) would be highly unlikely.

Its too much work.

Again it goes back to what would be the gain? I doubt if there would be much if any gain to going through the trouble of the process.

I suspect the words you saw were just by coincidence... I looked at your profile and I see no evidence here on SI to suggest you have been hacked. If you had, I would expect to see some dumb posts or a profile that had something wrong with it.

David

PS be sure to check out my site duneram.com

In case you haven't guessed 'DUNERAM' was my password on an old CDC NOS 760 mainframe.....

and what is a duneram? Its a fictional desert sand animal.

PPS: If I had the opportunity to hack your account, I would not, instead I would spend my time outdoors fishing and hiking. I wouldn't waste my time doing such a deed. It benefits no one.

If you are concerned about on-line privacy / security, bookmark these sites:

netsecurity.about.com

securityspace.com

You have to learn about possible security issues yourself. Don't rely on the media for your info, as it will most likely be sensationalised. But there are risks out there. I usually get port scans about every two days.

If you have a cable or DSL connection, then a firewall may be in order, depending how concerned you are about security:
