Ericsson and Mannesman rollout the world's first GSM adaptive antenna base stations

Mannesman Mobilfunk GmbH will deploy Ericsson's GSM Capacity Booster, a unique adaptive antenna solution, in the D2 GSM Network. It is a new innovative wireless access technology that further enables significant capacity and
quality improvements in GSM networks.

The Ericsson GSM Capacity Booster resolves capacity bottlenecks and further increases quality in a GSM network. Even when adaptive antennas are deployed in only 10 percent of a GSM network a total capacity improvement of 100
percent is possible.

To offer the subscribers a high quality of service is one of the highest priorities for operators when wireless data traffic takes off. Adaptive antennas ensure high quality of service and more efficient use of the existing GSM frequencies and infrastructure.

The GSM Capacity Booster was developed by Ericsson in close co-operation with Mannesman and is a milestone in wireless technology. The GSM Capacity Booster, which consists of an indoor radio base station (RBS 2205) and a passive
eight-lobe array antenna (adaptive antenna), is an integral part of Ericsson's high capacity solutions, which offers a complete solution portfolio for GSM operators who need to raise network capacity.

The GSM Capacity Booster improves the GSM network from a previously unused domain, spatial beam forming. Unlike conventional cellular antennas, which transmit over the entire cell, adaptive antennas use "beam forming" to direct
the signal in narrow beams towards the location of the mobile phone. Furthermore this improvement can be used on top of all other technologies to reach quality and capacity levels that previously were unreachable using conventional base stations.

Similar to all Ericsson RBS 2000 macro base stations, the GSM Capacity Booster offers a future proof solution, and will support GPRS, EDGE and 3G functionality.

Background information
Ericsson and Mannesman Mobilfunk began their joint research activities on adaptive antenna technology for GSM in early 1995. A research field trial was first carried out in Dsseldorf during 1996 to evaluate radio performance. In
1997, prototype base stations were developed and, in early 1998, integrated into the Mannesman Mobilfunk GSM network.
