Michael,

I have a question about the logistics of margin calls, not ever having experienced one in person (nor intending to).

Supposing a significant number of investors saw their equity in margined positions drop below maintenance levels on Friday, what happens next?

Do their brokers close the positions automatically? Do they get a margin call on Saturday with 3 days to raise the cash? Or what else can happen?

I'm just trying to figure out the time lag between margin calls and margin induced selling.

p.s. Just saw Joe Battapaglia on This Week, assuring us all that there will be a rally on Monday and Tuesday. Isn't this technically called "whistling past the graveyard"? Monday should prove interesting.
