RE: "even for MSFT-specific declines, this is the first one where the near-infinite destructive power of the US legal system has been brought to bear."

From the DELL thread:
Message 13431

"just heard the rush limbaugh is blaming today's action on Clinton Admin's attack against Microsoft, the tabacco industry, the pharaceuticals and the health industry."

I can't imagine Clinton & Gore giving too much more ammo like this to their opponent's. If Slick Willie has been anything he's been a turn-around artist. It wouldn't surprise me to see a very favorable settlement with MSFT if they view it to turn the markets and make Clinton & Gore look like the retirement fund hero's?

One thing is for sure MSFT is at a 52 week low and it took more than just the DOJ to get it there. All possible fears are in the stock. The best bet now is that something positive is due.

All valid concerns ...

I really don't like the climbing PE coupled with the declining acceleration in earnings. It looks like investors are paying more for shares of less value.

I also really don't like fighting the neighbourhood bully, and they don't get much bigger than Uncle Sam. Expect lots of dancing, juggling, cuts, and jabs. Also expect lots of blood too. So far, we've seen some nasty blows. More to come. The big question still remains unanswered --- How will the fight end? What'll be the injuries?

I've mellowed my position from defending oneself from improper attacks. Previously, I felt that if one wasn't guilty, pleading guilty was simply wrong. Now I realize that 'might makes right' and the forces aligned against Microsoft are quite mighty. (Mighty inappropriate too!) Since the powerful U.S. feels Microsoft has done wrong, and the powerful U.S. is prosecutor, judge, and executioner, Microsoft will pay dearly. Question is, how much further will the stock decline? Dunno!

If the stock price erodes again as much as it has already, the market would have taken away a chunk of my portfolio equal to the tax bite had I sold when I was preaching on this thread that Microsoft's stock price was too high and poised for a decline.

Too bad blame for the current market meltdown won't be pinned on the current occupants of the White House. When the general public experiences a dramatic evaporation of their savings and faces the risk or reality of the resulting slowdown of the entire economy, they may give serious thought to their decisions on election day. I'd welcome a new band of thieves pulling the levers of power.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. I posted the 'decline data' because someone aroused my curiosity enough that I extracted the numbers. Once the work was done, I thought I'd share the results. I wasn't trying to glean insights from it, but just thought it interesting.
