If the usual pattern applies, a lot of novice shorters will start hitting the mo-mo stocks at these low points and contribute to squeezes as the market tries to spike up again. I'm still short a ton of crappy dot.com losers but I wouldn't jump on the tech leaders here. Too many traders looking to ride them long for a quick 5-10-20 points, just enough to squeeze the kid at home who thinks shorting must be a way to make easy money now. For Paul's question why the media isn't covering new fortunes made going short; even if you top-ticked the Naz, shorts would only have made maybe 30% overall in the drop (assuming they didn't go heavily short in 2-3 stocks for more). The steady longs since 1998 are up well over 100% in most cases. Even with the drop, they are far ahead of where most shorts (certain talented pros excepted) are sitting right now. It's who has the most money at the end of the game that counts.
