You can't blame the Cuban-American groups for feeling the way they do. You can blame the U.S. politicos for stupidly being manipulated by Castro. If it was so important to return this kid to Cuba it should have been done Johnny on the spot five months ago. Where was the father five months ago?

Right now you would be inviting insurrection on the streets of Miami to attempt to remove the kid and most probably many people would die if force were used.

Most Cubans in Cuba want the boy returned so the TV can go back to normal and all the regular programming resumed. That is the depth of feeling for the average Cuban on the issue.

Cuban American policy was more strongly dictated by large mining company interests that lost world class gold and nickel deposits than it ever was by the ordinary Cuban American. They are a minority pure and simple.

Nobody wants to see another Janet Reno inspired catastrophe on the streets of Miami. It's interesting to see Clinton in California gushing over the sequoias while Gore is in hiding somewhere hoping the whole issue is handled by Reno.

Never was the U.S. so totally void of leadership.
