DaveMG: You have a good point. Up until now, the equipment manufacturers and the politico/bureaucrats have had the power to set standards and control the specs.

Now the operators such as VOD will be in a much stronger position of influence and growing power both in the marketplace using their huge buying power and in standards bodies in the future.

Clearly the simpler and more convergent the "modes" are, the better for the strongest operators such as VOD.

Why run multiple and non interoperative technologies in different parts of the world when convergence will make your position as an operator much more efficient.

Think we will see much more "activism" by operators such as VOD.

Where that will take us, it is hard to guess, but toward convergence seems likely.
