Mani - Re: Waterhouse margin req'd 50% for AMD

I was just reading the latest list since they pop it up when you long-on. It was not previously on this special list and is the only holding of my few which made the list.

One of the other Waterhouse customers who also uses margin should know -- I am trading a retirement account so it is N/A.

Mani, In Canada the minimum margin in some listed stocks is 50%. Many exchange stocks are not marginable or are marginable at rates higher than 50%, depends on their trading value and the province and brokers rules.
I had though that 50% was the minimum margin for any stock. In 1929 it was far lower and I have heard that is was 5-15% which accounts for the rapid wipeout of leveraged people....at 5% if a $20 stock fell $1 you were wiped out.
After that it was raised to a min of 50% I had thought?
