what do accelar 8600. packet core, open IP environment and optical ethernet do, functionally?

Jack, I only understand in a very general sense. Accelar 8600 is the new carrier grade Gigabit Ethernet switch. Packet Core describes part of the network management software for OPTera. Open IP refers to opening up the source code for their routers so that others can write applications using the code. Optical Ethernet, I think, refers to access to the optical network via ethernet. I am not technically sophisticated. I understand that IP is a transmission protocol and ethernet is a network architecture.
