Claude:

You made some very interesing points, esp. with respect
to the size of the gold mining sector as compared with
20 years ago. The gold funds managers have been tearing
their hair out with the relentless redemptions. Possibly,
this has exagerated the down move in the stocks. On the
upside, money shifting into this sector could do the
opposite.

Reg Howe has written an interesting piece on the Swiss gold
sales, which, strange as it may seem to the mainstream
press, he views as bullish for gold, as it may enable
the European central banks to cover their gold loans, and
add some liquidity on the physical side, which has been
a problem.

Another viewpoint, esp. with regard to the hedge funds that
are short gold, that may be one of the few areas in their
portfolio that shows a profit. However, to establish that
profit, they have to buy the gold back, or cover their
shorts. They may need to do that in order to cover the
losses in the rest of their portfolios. This of course
would have the impact of raising the gold price, unless
a powerful force is there selling against their purchases.
We'll see over the next few days.

Regards

Dan
