Who really knows? One thing for sure about IRSN is that margin debt is no longer an issue below $5.00. It continues to be an issue for the broader market -- $279 billion in margin debt as of March 2000 -- compounded by the end of the lock-up periods for a bumper crop of poor quality IPOs, etcetera, etcetera. The trillion dollar question for the Fed and some leading economists is the real size of that margin debt and other pseudo-margin debt such as credit cards and home equity loans used to fund stock purchases and to what extent that contributes to the imbalances.
