Ted,

Isn't that because Willy is a fairly immature architecture; besides, over time shouldn't it begin to exceed the Athlon in MHz capability by quite a lot?

I think this would be pure speculation. We can't see that far, and niether can Wall Street. The Street is assuming that AMD will be blown out of the water bt Willy, so we can only go up from here. Speaking of being blown out of the water by Willy, actually, a whale can do something to a smaller fish.

Surprisingly, AMD will be at 1.5 GHz in January 2001 (according to Jerry), which is a parity with Willy. At that time, AMD may be reporting $2.50 to $3.00 quarter.

Ted,

Well now, Willy might just do exactly as you say. It might not either. To date, Intel has not proven to my satisfaction that Willy will beat Athlon. They have shown that Willy might beat Athlon someday.

Think of this as a bet with odds. Would you accept a dollar wager that Willy will eventually beat Athlon/Mustang? How about at a million to one odds? The odds you would pick show how confident you are that Willy will eventually beat Athlon.

Personally, I'd give Willy about a 75% chance of eventually beating Athlon/Mustang in Mhz. Of course, by the time Willy does it, the question may be more along the lines of beating Sledgehammer...

The very deep pipeline on Willy will allow it to run very quickly. On the other hand, further speed improvements will be harder to come by. Each pipe stage is very short, and it will be difficult to improve the speed, except through process enhancements.
