PC Sales in Fourth Week of March Reach Record High April 17, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Japan's spring PC sales season has reached its peak, with PC sales at retail stores in the fourth week of March 2000 registering a record high level. This is partly due to an extra holiday on March 20 -- Vernal Equinox Day. According to the statistics compiled by Gfk Japan Ltd., PC sales at about 2,000 outlets in the fourth week of March (March 20-26, 2000) increased 26.1 percent from the previous week on a unit basis, and 26.4 percent, on a value basis. Gfk Japan is an information service company handling POS data for 42 volume sales chain stores of home electric appliances. As compared with the corresponding week of last year (March 22-28, 1999), the PC sales surged 86.8 percent on a unit basis, and 61.3 percent on a value basis. The average PC price during the week was 201,813 yen, up 518 yen from the previous week's 201,295 yen. (106.06 yen = US$1) Sony Corp. performed particularly well. Sales of its VAIO Series were brisk both in terms of desktop/tower units and notebook PCs. These products are playing the role of a driving force in the market, along with the products of Fujitsu Ltd. and NEC Corp. As for the desktop/tower PCs, the low-priced models between 100,000 yen and 150,000 yen sold well. NEC's Value Star U Series, Fujitsu's Desk Power ME3, and Sony's VAIO J Series were extremely popular. Among notebook PCs, the F50A in the VAIO Series (released by Sony in March) is showing a remarkable growth in sales. It is equipped with an audio-visual function, which is Sony's point of emphasis, and an improved processing function for its CPU. Moreover, Microsoft Office 2000 has already been installed in the model. At volume shops, sales of this model are catching up with those of other popular models, such as NEC's LaVie NX LW450 and Fujitsu's FMV-BIBLO NE3. GfK Japan collects POS data from 42 IT-related store chains centering on high-volume stores specializing in home electric appliances. It covers about 3,200 stores (as of October 1999) throughout Japan. In cooperation with GfK Japan, Nikkei Market Access provides weekly reports of PC sales in volume and value. The sales data has been based on the same store chains (with about 2,000 outlets) since April 1996. The number of PCs sold at the 2,000 outlets is estimated to comprise about 10 percent of gross domestic shipments, and to form a 25 percent share in the retail sales channel's market.nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com
