Eurostocks off lows as steadier Wall St beckons

Monday April 17, 6:31 am Eastern Time

LONDON, April 17 (Reuters) - European bourses were still off their sharp opening lows by
late morning on Monday as prospects for Wall Street appeared to rule out a repeat of
Friday's rout in U.S. stocks.

Technology, the weakest sector for much of the morning, recovered some of its footing and,
though still down, was in line the broader market as tech leader Nokia halved its opening
losses.

Media, banks, financials, basic producers, telecoms and retailers were weakest as selling hit new and old economy companies.

Sentiment was helped by solid gains for T-Online , the German Internet service provider in its Frankfurt debut. The stock was
trading at nearly 34 euros compared with an offer price of 27.

S&P stock index futures, off more than 20 points when Europe opened, were down just 0.5 point. Nasdaq 100 futures also
pared nearly all of their losses.

The Eurotop 300 index was off three percent after being down more than four percent at the open.

The Euro STOXX 50 index was off 2.8 percent.
