merrill lynch broker told me no extensions on margin calls were being given by any brokerages - all due today by 1 pm.

usually they review and call people after the market close. When they just force close enough of your position(s) out is another matter. Frequently, they will do it about 5 minutes after you promise to cover by if you haven't delivered. So this weekend's margin calls could go for a few days before the brokerage does something.

I inadvertently got short an equity by 100 to 1 due to shares being poot and not being able to reach the brokerage to tell them to sell the poot. Drove my account down under 10% equity. i was able to ride for 3 days before I closed the position but they were really pissed about it. As they should have been because I could have swung negative 10 or 20% easy, considering the current environment.

So, it all depends.
