I've never seen much recovery except for the lawyers. However, the suits sometimes serve a prophylactic effect. They usually file them if the numbers and probabilities of a good settlement look reasonable to the lawyers. Until a suit is filed and discovery is taken, however, nobody can really know whether any wrongdoing has taken place.
