I agree with your crucible analogy.

Recall '87, with the 500 multiplier and
how tough it was being short or long 10 pt.
swings. Now the current environment has 20 pt jumps
either way. I think the longs will get tired of
it before the shorts (who are carrying much
less inventory but also help contribute to
the swings with short covering.) BWDIK.
