Egghead.com Logs On To Grey/SF; Leading online retailer calls upon Grey/SF for $50 million brand re-positioning
Tuesday, April 18, 2000 12:01 PM

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 18, 2000--Emerging victorious from a stringent competitive review, Grey Advertising/SF, a division of Grey Advertising, one of the world's leading independent advertising and communications companies, today announced it has been awarded the $50 million Egghead.com account. Agencies competing were BBDO/NY and Black Rocket.
Egghead (www.egghead.com) has evolved from a brick-and-mortar software seller into a leading e-commerce retailer offering computer hardware and software, consumer electronics, sporting goods and vacation packages. It also hosts a popular auction site. Egghead.com's position as a top destination site for technology consumers was recently confirmed by the No. 1 rankings from several leading e-commerce research firms, including Nielsen//NetRatings, PC Data Online and Gomez.com. Not coincidentally, Media Metrix reported that Egghead.com's customer base grew 3 percent from January to February.

Grey/SF will create a national branding campaign for Egghead.com that will break in the fall.

"Grey/SF demonstrates the expertise in Business-to Business development and clear understanding of today's competitive e-commerce market necessary to effectively address our needs," said Bari Abdul, senior vice president of marketing for Egghead.com. "We took a close look at several leading agencies and found Grey/SF to be the ideal agency to help build the Egghead.com brand and support our mobilization to international expansion."

The Egghead.com win is the latest addition to the near-exponential growth Grey has experienced recently in its San Francisco office. Since February, the agency has also added NorthPoint Communications and Tradiant, Inc. to its existing high-powered lineup of Oracle, 24-Hour Fitness, Galileo Foods (a Division of Sara Lee Corp.), Cyrano Sciences, Inc., Homebid.com and Challenge Butter.

"Grey/SF is clearly an agency on the rise," said Alan Randolph, creative director and co-managing director of Grey/SF. "The agency has retooled, revitalized and reinvented itself into a one-stop shop for any client-partner that's serious about success."

"Grey/SF is in the enviable position of being an established agency with the soul and spirit of a startup," said Kieran Hannon, co-managing director at Grey/SF. "Also, by combining the prominent reputation of the Grey brand with an environment that is very entrepreneurial, Grey/SF's passion and success has attracted the best client-partners and creative talent to our team."

Anyone have any thoughts on the last 20 minutes of trading on Friday ?

Eggs took a big dive -- in 20 minutes it dropped from 5 1/4 to 4 bucks on 1M shares. Yet the earnings news, which appears to be ok but not great, occurred after the close on Wednesday.

I bought some in after hours on Thursday.

Thanks,
Chris

PS -- Before posting, I did a full text search on EGGS. No one else mentioned it. Does anyone post anything on any stocks here anymore ?
