Johnson Controls Profits Climb 35 Pct
MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - Johnson Controls Inc. (NYSE:JCI - news) reported a higher-than-expected 35 percent increase in second quarter profits on Monday, as results were boosted by higher sales and improved margins.

The company, which makes automotive systems, batteries and building control products, said it earned $88.8 million or 95 cents a diluted share in the second quarter ended March 31, 2000.

That compares with net income of $65.8 million or 70 cents a share reported in the year-ago quarter. Fiscal 1999 results exclude a one-time gain associated with the sale of businesses which amounted to $32.5 million after-taxes, or 35 cents per diluted share.

Analysts expected Johnson Controls to report a profit of 89 cents a share, according to a survey by First Call/Thomson Financial, which tracks such data.

Total sales for the second quarter of fiscal 2000 rose 12 percent to $4.4 billion from $3.9 billion for the same quarter of fiscal 1999.
