Anindo, this tidbit about increased church attendance is quite interesting...it supports the theory that the societal and cultural background is not the same during bull and bear markets.

re. the rally, i think many allowed for the possibility of one if the market failed to fall out of bed completely. and while it was quite a big rally, it was also one of the narrowest rallies of recent memory, and that's quite a feat.

i don't think real estate in Tokyo in '89 will ever be rivaled again...although it's pretty clear that there are big real estate bubbles in selected areas in the US.
