Interestingly, the hives tend to store far less honey than the European honeybees' hives, directing more (proportionately) food resources to the larvae, which reach adulthood a day earlier. They are also less able to cope with colder climates because the hives tend to be smaller, which means that there are fewer adults to "shiver" in the winter and provide warmth to the hive.
