The limitation is due to the extra capacitance associated with the unregistered DIMMs. All easily calculable. Very easy to make the simulations that ensure signal integrity.

The user is hardly going to make those calculations. Are you suggesting that the output drivers cannot deliver enough current to drive the signals fast enough, or that reflections become worse and ringing is intolerable when several unregistered DIMMs are used?

How much extra does it cost to buy registered DDR DIMMs? How much extra power is used?
