I think that even if they were able to eliminate the ground traces bracketing the data lines, you still require a ground pin next to every data pin.
If I remember my strip line transmission theory, the image is an imaginary current that flows a distance H, (the dielectric thickness), below the ground plane and forms part of the signal path. (Analogous to a two-wire line in which one of the wires is an image in the ground plane). It's important that a ground VIA to the ground plane be next to the signal connection, (preferably below it), to prevent any discontinuities in the signal path.
