Ray,

At the risk of jinxing your appearance here, it's awfully nice to see you hanging 'round these parts. :)

One comment: One of the uses of margin, often overlooked, is that the interest is tax deductible against investment income.

For those who don't understand the particulars as you do, the interest offsets income (such as dividend income) but it doesn't offset capital gains.

Hi Ray,

I think that these market declines are often some of the best opportunities assuming that one has the cash available when they occur.

Your comments on the use of margin are valid; I think there are people who use it effectively and judiciously but the vast majority, I suspect, get burned by it. I, personally, don't use margin.

Are you still on the East Coast or back in California?

Moved to Northern Virginia almost two years ago -- it has turned out to be a good move, though I miss the weather but the lack of congestion makes up for it. It is ironical that I lived in one of the most liberal enclaves of Southern California and then moved to one of the most conservative sections of No Va!

My neighbors -- mainly executives and a smattering of entrepreneurs -- were probably initially a little concerned that the neighborhood was going down-hill with a futures trader moving in. Since most of them don't know anything about futures trading other than that it is very high-risk, they probably expect my house to be on the market every time the market declines! Really they are a little mystified that at my relatively young age, I am not in some more conventional occupation -- one who knows of my background tells me that I am way too young to retire and another (the CEO of a company here) even asked me if I would like to do some consulting for his company; I told him that is sounded too much like work!:) There is an ex-AOL executive who owns a house here, has a place in Florida and one in Paris -- spreads his time out between these different locations.

Take care
