2000 X Games, ESPN Gets Creative With Chyron
Total Chyron 'Platform' Specified for Graphics Suite
MELVILLE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 9, 2000--Chyron Corporation (NYSE: CHY - news), a leading provider of broadcast hardware, software and services spanning television and the Internet, today announced that ESPN will broadcast the 2000 X Games using all major systems from Chyron Graphics, a subsidiary of Chyron Corporation.
ESPN's uniquely uncomplicated solution was to unify as many components as possible under a single software and hardware platform. As a result, Chyron is providing six Duets®, two dedicated to Chyron's Lyric® graphics and animation software and four to Chyron's Liberty® paint and animation software. In addition Chyron will also provide Aprisa® 250 Stillstore/ Clipstore, an Aprisa 200 Digital Disk Recorder and an Aprisa 300 Video Replay System, as well as two Chyron iNFiNiT!® CGs. To further maximize performance for the Liberty animation software, Chyron has installed DPS' dpsReality cards and Medea VideoRaid 6/225 RT arrays. Gigabit Ethernet will handle high-speed data transfers between systems.
``Chyron's NT-based Duet is what makes this project possible,'' says Joe Flynn, Broadcast Graphics Technical Consultant to the X Games. ``Not only can we take advantage of the common hardware to provide redundancy and networked task sharing, but we can make use of other NT software tools that forced us to rely heavily on exporting and importing in the past. It all happens inside the box now.''
``By having an NT platform across the board, we have consistency and uniformity from one device to another. Ordinarily, we'd be running on several different types of specialized hardware with proprietary software each of which having its own little quirk that you have to massage to make it cooperate. We're betting that in the very near future, the unified hardware/software suite will be the standard. It's a better way to approach things all the way around.''
The X Games graphics suite will be part of a dedicated production installation, on call to give 24/7 broadcast support to the Mecca of skateboarding, surfing and BMX biking. ``It's a big project,'' Flynn notes. ``The X Games graphics suite will provide a full range of graphic content to the live host broadcast and feed several edit suites. The goal is to be capable of responding to the whim and fancy of every member of the X games working body.''
Besides offering a comprehensive range of graphics products, the long-standing relationship between ESPN and Chyron -- from the studio to countless remote location productions - made for a natural fit in this fresh approach to live graphics. ``To incorporate everything we need into one or two types of hardware is what we ultimately want to achieve, ''Joe Flynn concludes. ``It makes sense to go to the people that established the industry standard in the first place. We push them and they push back. We evolve and they rush up to meet it.''
The 2000 X Games will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC from August 19th - August 30th.
