Sycamore Networks Intelligent Optical Network Node Named Product of the Year by
Network Magazine

CHELMSFORD, Mass., Apr 19, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Sycamore Networks, Inc.
(NASDAQ: SCMR), a leading provider of intelligent optical networking products,
today announced that the company's SN 8000 Intelligent Optical Network Node, was
recently chosen as the "Metropolitan Area Device" of the year by the editors of
Network Magazine. Network Magazine's Product of the Year Awards are among the
longest running, independent product awards in the networking/IT field.

"Sycamore's SN 8000 stood out as the most significant Metropolitan Area Device
offering based on the product's ability to support a range of optical
applications and to provide just-in-time provisioning, which reduces deployment
of new services from months to minutes," said Doug Allen, senior editor of
Network Magazine. "As one of the few optical vendors with shipping product and
customers in 1999, Sycamore remains the one to beat as the telecommunications
industry goes optical."

Product of the Year Award winners will be featured in the May issue of Network
Magazine and awarded on Wednesday, May 10th at a reception at the Bellagio Hotel
in Las Vegas during the N+I tradeshow. The selection process is internal with no
solicited or unsolicited input from vendors.

"Sycamore's SN 8000 offers metro service providers the core infrastructure to
build next generation networks that are both flexible and cost effective," said
Bill McCullen, director of product marketing, transport and switching, at
Sycamore Networks. "At Sycamore Networks, we're focused on developing and
delivering products that address real needs in the marketplace and we're honored
to receive this award from Network Magazine that recognizes our success."
