America Online profit rises along with AOL subscriber base

<<DULLES, Va., April 18 (Reuters) - America Online Inc. (NYSE:AOL - news), the No. 1 Internet services provider, on Tuesday said its net earnings in the fiscal third quarter rose 161 percent as the company logged robust growth in revenues from electronic commerce, advertising and online services.

AOL, soon to rank as one of the leading media companies with its acquisition of Time Warner Inc. (NYSE:TWX - news) pending, posted $271 million, or $0.11 per diluted share net income -- fully taxed and excluding one-time items -- for the three months ended March 31. That compares to $104 million, or $0.04 per diluted share in the year-earlier quarter.

Analysts were looking for company to report a profit of 9 cents a share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

Revenues rose to $1.8 billion, up 47 percent, with the benchmark advertising, commerce and other revenues more than doubling to $557 million compared to last year's fiscal third quarter, it said.

The Dulles, Va.-based company added 1.7 million new members to its flagship AOL service, bringing total membership to 22.2 million members at the end of the quarter.>>
