I was going to respond to gilderite, but I see your answer addresses my comment. My street was just upgraded (as was the city I live in) with new cable to the home even though ATT already has cable in place. I was hoping it would be fiber to the home, and wondered why they would put cable in if it is already there. The answer (I believe) is that it is a Hybrid Fiber Coax system. I thought that term was just mumbo jumbo from the provider, but it appears to be legit. I believe that there will be fiber far deeper into the system than there is now. From conversations with the installers it sounds like the coax is just the last link to each home from the main power lines where fiber will be installed leading to some type of junction box. I am most curious to try this new service, which should be ready within a few months. The product is called Astound and it is being provided by a company called Seren, which is owned by a midwestern power company. I'd be interested if anyone knows how many homes would be served by the coax part of the connection. I am hoping that is a relatively small amount (my street has 11 houses), and will try to find out myself as this unfolds.
