Matsushita, Oracle Japan Sign Domestic Digital TV Pact

TOKYO -- Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (MC or 6752) and Oracle Corp. Japan (J.ORA or 4716) said Wednesday that they have signed a strategic partnership to team up in the area of digital TV broadcasting and interactive network services.

Ahead of the December introduction of BS digital broadcasting in Japan, the partners will jointly develop comprehensive systems which control data for the production, transmission, distribution and management of content for digital interactive services.

Under the deal, Matsushita Electric will provide much of the technology for digital editing and broadcasting and Oracle Japan will supply the database and search engines.

The companies didn't say how much they plan to invest in the business venture.

Speaking at a press conference, Yoshio Hino, director of Matsushita Electric's network business division, said the companies have developed prototype products, but that they won't be ready to begin selling products and services until later in the year.

"We're still at the very beginning stages," said Hino. "But without the kind of systems support we will offer, we believe it will be very difficult for the digital broadcast industry in Japan to advance smoothly."

Hideyo Sugimoto, Matsushita Electric' general manager of network business promotions, said the companies don't have sales revenue forecasts for the new cooperative venture. The focus at this point is to develop an industry standard before the kickoff of BS digital broadcasting service in December, he said.

"Right now, the U.K. and the U.S. are far ahead in this field," said Sugimoto. "We're still at an elementary school level when you compare the technological advancement."
