Microsoft to challenge Palm dominance in the handheld PC market.

nytimes.com

I have no doubt that tomorrow's edition of "Circuits" in the NY Times will have an enormous, full-page color ad promoting Microsoft's new operating system. In fact, I would not doubt that they have the two center pages. Computing is leaving the desktop. It's going into people's pockets as handheld devices. It's going inside your TV. "Internet Applicance" is going to be the latest buzz word. Microsoft realizes this and is going to push Pocket PC very, very hard.

Once the word gets out about the beauty of the multimedia applications in the Microsoft Pocket PC OS there will be a mass exodus from the Palm PC camp. Stodgy business types who want wireless access for stock quotes or boring gray-scale web clippings (to match their wingtips and pin stripes) will be stuck with their Palms. New legions of handheld users will flock to the Casio, HP and Compaq devices sporting Pocket PC. Clear Type will bring an enjoyable reading experience to the palmtop and MP3 capability will lure a younger generation of uninitiated users.

The lack of expandable memory, stereo audio capability and an aesthetically pleasing color screen will disappoint the current Palm devotees. Palm's offerings will appear mediocre at best.

In short, Palm is going to have their ass handed to them. The writing is on the walls...

...and its in vivid 16 bit color, my friends.
