W-CDMA vs cdma2000

What it is
W-CDMA aka wideband cdma aka direct sequence cdma.
W-CDMA flavors (currently Japanese and European - UMTS) incorporate a GSM call model.
cdma2000 uses the IS-95 call model (based on AMPS).
IS-95 is the current 'narrow' band digital standard employed in US and Korea.

The players
cdma2000 (a.k.a IS2000) is sponsored by mostly by QCOM, and endorsed by the Korean handset manufacturers; W-CDMA players include NOK/IDC; ERICY; most of the European chip players (e.g. Seimens; Philips et al) and the Japanese network providers.

availabilty
Although it is being field tested now, W-CDMA wont be available any time soon. IS2000 will be available much sooner.

migration path
The logical migration paths are IS-95 --> IS2000 and GSM --> W-CDMA (UMTS).

With an eye on the Chinese market, QCOM is keen to deploy
IS2000 in Japan. However, the Japanese network operators announced their intention to move towards their own flavor of W-CDMA.

China, by the way, is the largest single GSM network, with 40million subscribers. The Chinese are playing Europe against the US for favorable terms regarding WTO membership and technological 'partnerships'. Because of this manoevering, it's not easy to predict which technology China will eventually settle on.
