the arms index, i believe was developed by dick army, the guy CNBC drags out now and again. the index also known as the TRIN or ^STI.N (short term trade index) is a pretty good indicator of buy/ sell opportunities. sometimes called the fear indicator. it is calculated by dividing the advance/decline volume into the advance/decline ratio. it is usually right around 1.0, anything over 2.0 is a buy op and anything under a sell indicator (short term). a lot of traders watch the TRIN, VIX and the put call ratio for a pretty good indicators of the market direction and investor sentiment.
